How do I stop my african american hair from shedding AND start growing?

I am a african american woman whom has just began my quest for HEALTHY HAIR. I am trying to grow my hair out, but I cannot find one product line to stick to. Recently, my hair has began to shed a lot (within the last two weeks). I do not understand why! I want to grow my hair longer, but I do not know where to begin. I know I could just go to the salon, but I kinda wanted to do it myself. Any suggestions???? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

What I love is something by Aphogee called two-step protein treatment (small bottle $6 and big bottle $16-18) . It is followed by a reconstructer conditioner. This protein treatment dries hard on your hair and is to be used under a dryer without a cap or blow dryer without a comb on it. This stuff is not to combed while drying on your hair. It stops breakage immediately and builds hair for 6 weeks. I use it twice a month and it makes my hair so smooth and healthy that many think that I have a perm. I also like Aphogee's shampoo, conditioner and leave-in treatments. Also, try not to put a lot of stuff on your scalp after washing/blowing/hot combing because you need you scalp to breathe to allow new growth. This stuff works!

i heard olive oil does the trick.

well the main thing is keeping it moisturized.

but to have healthy hair, you must be healthy on the inside as well.

these are some tips to achieve and maintain healthy hair:

*keep it clean by washing at least once a week

*keep it moisturized

*avoid excessive heat use

*avoid overuse of chemicals (dye, perm, etc)

*maintain a healthy diet

*drink plenty of water

*get the dead ends trimmed every 2-3 months

*take multi vitamins or vitamin e

if you can elliminate getting lots of split ends, that will help because split ends get snagged when you brush your hair and cause more breakage.

you can also sleep on satin pillowcases or with a satin bonnet or scarf because cotton pillowcases can also snag your hair.

try not to get weaves or braids too often becuase it cal also pull and break hair off. if you wear pony tails, make sure you dont pull them too tight.

to give your hair a break from harsh styling practices everyday, you can try getting a roller set every week or every other week. that way, you wont have to worry about curling, flat ironing, or brushing your hair as much, and it will let your hair breathe. you can just wear a bonnet to keep the curls looking fresh longer.

some products i use that really work for me are olive and coconut oil, lusters pink oil moisturizer, and B%26amp;B super gro grease (i dont think it makes hair grow faster, but its great for moisturizing)

if you get relaxers every 6 weeks like many african american women seem to believe they have to, try to cut back. lots of relaxers in a short period of time is not good for your hair. i get mine every 2 to 3 months. at leas try to wait as long as you can before the new growth gets out of control.

when you use flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers, make sure you use a good heat protectant to avoid heat damage. i use silk works preofessional serum.

hair sheds a certain amount each day. its normal. but healthy hair sheds less. also, hair grows about half an inch a month, about 6 inches a year. so you have to be pretty patient, but you can grow your hair back out.

its not going to be an overnight process, but if you really take care of your hair, it can become healthier with time. then it will not break off as much and shed so much. good luck :)

First get your hair trimmed, stop using chemicals on it, when using a flat iron use lots of protection, wash only once a week with deep conditioning

If you're trying to go from relaxed to natural, you're going to have breakage at the point where your relaxed hair meets the natural hair. Keep it trimmed often.

The shedding could be caused by many things. If it's breaking off from the root and thinning out, try a multivitamin. It happened to me, and my stylist told me to take a one-a-day 2x per day for like 2 weeks, and then make sure I continue taking it every day. That's stopped the breakage.

If the ends are breaking, make sure you're wrapping it at night and using a satin cap of some kind. Also, check to make sure your products don't have alcohol in them (many black products do). Try something with castor oil, olive oil, or shea butter or tea tree oil as the main ingredients. I've heard of people using these items in their natural state with good results.

Moisturizing is key. It's best to use natural product because chemicals can be damaging. I recommend checking out www.rastagroup.com

Also use a daily leave in conditioner/moisturizer like Sunsilk. At night either wrap your hair or wear some sort of satin or silk cap to lack in the moisture.

Some shedding is natural when it comes to hair. Be sure to use as little heat as possible on your hair. Try to just towel dry, maybe even wear your hair in braids for awhile until you can get it healthy and strong. Braids and weaves are a great way to maintain a cute style while allowing your real hair a chance to become stronger. Hope this helped
