Dyeing African American hair from Blonde to Dark Brown?

I am an african american women who has a short crop haircut. I have blonde chunks of highlights in the front (it has been died) and would like to die all of my hair a dark brown. I have olive colored skin so black is to dark for me. I have heard stories about your hair turning green if you don't do this properly. I can't afford to go to the stylist right now but I have really out grown the blonde look. Any suggestion on how I should do this?
