you can't speed up hair growth, growth rate is determined by your genetics. if you keep your hair healthy then it will grow to it's fullest potential...if no one in your family has long hair, you may just have short hair genetics. however, when your hair gets to shoulder length it is the toughest growth stage to get past because your hair is always brushing against things, it is best to do alot of protective styles during this stage, so as not to cause too much damage.

and no...trimming does not make your hair grow, it just stops your hair from breaking off as it grows so you can actually see the growth as it comes in

I'm not sure if it will help your hair type, but mane and tail shampoo and conditioner helps hair to grow. They use that on horses to help their mane grow. I also use it. Hope it helps.

Hair is protein, so eat more of that, and it might help your hair grow.

Don't smoke, load up on caffeine or fatty/sugary foods.

As much as possible, try to avoid heating your hair. I'm black, too, so I know how hard this can be. I wash my hair 3-4 times a week, but I only blow-dry once a week. Otherwise, I just let it air-dry, then I use a low setting on my flat iron.

Also, getting your ends trimmed every six weeks will help your hair grow, too.

AND, the infamous relaxers. I know it's expensive, but if you get relaxers, try to get it done at a salon. The store-bought ones are cheaper, but it's much easier to screw it up and overprocess the rest of your hair.

There's also something called HairTopia vitamins that are specifically made to help hair grow.
