How to make African American hair grow?

I'm 3/4 African American and 1/4 Indian and my hair used to be long past my shoulders when I was a kid but I had to get it cut because I let people play in my hair and they tangled it up but know I'm 13 almost 14 and my hair has been cut since I was like 9 or 10 but it doesn't want to grow back how do I make it grow back?

I have micro braids right now!

How to make African American hair grow?

You hair is always growing. if it wasnt you would be bald! What you need to focus on it retaining length. most likely the reason you do not see length is because you hair is breaking off.

you need to assess the reason why your hair is breaking off. it it frequent relaxers? too much heat? not enough moisture?

here are some site that are great resources on how to help you attain the length you want

www.longhaircareforum.com

www.blackhairmedia.com

in these site they have black women (mixed and unmixed( with who are in the process of attaining or already have long hair. i find them a great encouragement and a great source of information. remember to look on the forums!

How to make African American hair grow?

I am the same (heritage wise!!) ok get a trim when you take out your micros, deep condtion then keep your hair in a protective style buns, braids, sew ins etc... Please use a deep conditioner and refrain from using heat everyday!! If you do so,your hair will not retain length.. Trust me you will see growth.. Also if you get relaxers please space them out do not relax every 8 wks. try going for 3 months (12wks)... It will improve the overall health of your hair..

Straightening Balm on african american hair?

does straightening balm work on african american hair? will it make my thick coarse hair go back to being straight after washing it (with a relaxer in it)? After the 2nd week of having a relaxer and washing my hair it ends up being very thick and dry looking, it feels like bristle instead of soft. Does straightening blam give this effect?

Straightening Balm on african american hair?

No, it doesn't work but just try to straighten it with a hair straightner, and maybe braid it before you go to bed to help your hair become stronger and softer

Straightening Balm on african american hair?

Don't use that. Your hair is dry bc you need moisture in it. Try B%26amp;B moisturizer and S-Curl. I use S-Curl and I'm in LOVE with it. It keeps my hair moisturized and soft. Because we are more prone breakage we need a lot of moisture for the hair. Try to straighten hair once a week. No more than that.

In the mean time check this web forum out. These ladies are very informational and will help you: http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/

Question about natural African American hair: (truly kinky hair)?

For those of you that wear un-relaxed natural hair, What styles do find to be the least damaging? I had fallen in love with my 2-strand twists, but I am scared to put them back in my hair b/c last time when I took them out, I lost a lot of hair--now, I had them in for 7 weeks, so maybe that's why, but if next time I keep them in for only like 2 weeks, will it not be as damaging to my hair? Thanks for all your answers.

Question about natural African American hair: (truly kinky hair)?

I'm doing protective styles until it grows out and them I'm getting Sisterlocks. Those are really thin dredlocks basically that are more versatile in styling.

You should try some tree braids or an interlock weave. I'm going to try an interlock weave. They're basically braids that look like a weave, but if this isn't the look you're going for you could try some fancy corn rows. I could never pull those off though because my head is shaped funny.

Hope I helped!

Oh, and about the twists, I have some of those in my head now. They messed my hair up last time but I tried them again anyway. Hopefully they won't yank too much of my hair out. I don't recommend getting those again.

Question about natural African American hair: (truly kinky hair)?

i know many black women w/ natural hair, and the ones w/ short hair just wash it, then comb it and go, and on most of them it looks good. most of the ones w/ longer hair that i knwo get it pressed. but none of them have damaged hair

Question about natural African American hair: (truly kinky hair)?

Hmm...I'm gonna have to go with cornrows. Definitely the least damaging. And also, the shorter you keep them in, the less damage you'll have, but the constant combing and re-doing is bound to take its toll too. The rule of thumb is: The longer you leave it alone, the healthier/longer/whatever-er it gets. But if you're using synthetic hair for your cornrows and stuff, the longer you leave it in, the more hair you'll have stuck in your comb when you take it out. I guess you just have to find a balance.

African american hair question?

so my hair is thick. when its not permed its almost too thick to comb. how do u take care of it? any short hairstyle suggestions?

African american hair question?

Relax your hair every 6 to 8 weeks depending on your hair's needs. Do not relax your hair every time new growth appears. For one week following your relaxer, use a reconstructor instead of your regular conditioner when you wash your hair. Aphogee makes an excellent reconstructor and shampoo. After a week return to your regular shampoo and conditioner.

Wash and condition your hair every 4 to 5 days and at the most once a week. Try to use shampoo and conditioner designed for dry hair. Ultra Black Hair and Tresseme for damaged hair are excellent conditioners. Rarely if ever use a towel or a blow dryer to dry your hair. Instead, to prevent damage, air dry the hair, separating it with your fingers as it dries. Or you can allow it to dry undisturbed then comb with a large tooth comb (this will keep the volume down).

It is best to avoid using heat to dry your hair, however, if you prefer heat, then avoid hand held dryers. Use a hood dryer instead. With repeated usage, all hair dryers will damage and dry-out your hair, but the hood type will not damage it as quickly. The hair should be completely dry before you use a curling or flat iron on it.

When using a curling iron to style your hair, do not allow the barrel cover to clamp down on your hair. Hold the barrel cover slightly open and allow the hair to move over the curling iron barrel without the tugging and pulling caused by pressure from the barrel cover. Whenever the barrel cover clamps down on your hair it creates a weak point at which breakage is inevitable.

Never use hair oil on relaxed hair. Hair oil was designed for natural hair, and its usage on relaxed hair is the major reason African American hair breaks off at such an alarming rate. If your hair is well conditioned you won't need any oil at all. If you do prefer some oil, rub a small amount in the palms and spread lightly through the hair. Keep in mind excessive oil will make your hair stiff and because it cannot move naturally it will break off (especially if you do not wash it frequently). If you choose to use oil, it is best to wash it off within a few days.

Use as little heat as possible with your hair as heat can only do more damage. Its ok to style your hair with a curling iron, however a rollerset is the best method with either a large or small curler depending on the size you want. If you use curlers at night be sure to tie them down to keep them from moving as you sleep. If the curlers are allowed to move as you sleep, it will weaken the roots and the hair will fall out from the roots.

Alternate between cold and heated styling. If you use a curling iron one day, set your hair with rollers the next day. This will help to minimize heat damage.

Although water based moisturizers are best for relaxed hair, never apply them close to the roots. If you have longer hair, leave about 4 to 6 inches of clean hair between your roots and the moisturizer. For shorter hair apply it at the ends. This will prevent the hair from becoming tangled at the roots. Ultra Black Hair Lotion Creme is an excellent moisturizer. You can also try Dudley's PCA Moisture Retainer to see if it works for your hair.

Drink plenty of water daily and check your hair's moisture level every day. To test your hair's moisture level, follow these simple steps:

First, Gently hold some of your hair in your hand. If your hair is cool to the touch and feels silky, it is clean, well conditioned and you are drinking adequate amounts of water. If your hair is warm to the touch, oily or dry like paper it is in need of cleaning, conditioning and you should increase your water intake.

Second, shake your head gently. If your hair bounces and moves easily it is clean, well conditioned and you are drinking enough water. If your hair does not move at all, the moisture level is very low. It is time to wash and condition your hair and increase your water intake.

Third, comb your hair gently. If there is no hair on the comb or on your clothing the moisture level is good. If there is hair on the comb or on your clothing, your hair's moisture level is very low. Wash and condition your hair as soon as you get the chance and increase your water intake. You might also want to avoid using heated styling instruments for a few days.

It is important to condition your hair often, however, when it is close to the time for you to get a touch up of your relaxer, the roots or your hair will be very dense and it will be difficult to properly rinse the conditioner out at the roots. Because hair will break off if conditioner is not properly rinsed away, you can do the following when your roots are very dense. Place 50% conditioner and 50% very hot water in a container and stir it until it becomes the consistency of shampoo. Once the mixture cools use it as you normally would. It will easily rinse from your roots. Do not use the diluted conditioner more than once or twice as it will not properly condition your hair. Get your touch up as soon as you get the chance and once your roots are straightened, return to using the conditioner full strength.

Find a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Use the one particular to your hair type. For instance, if your hair is dry...choose a dry hair brand. If your hair is colored choose a brand for color care. Choose products with alot of natural ingredients. On African American hair, mineral oils and synthetic materials weigh the hair down and cause it to be brittle. Aphogee shampoo and and reconstructor are excellent about $9.00 a bottle. #Black hair can get very dry, so moisture is key when nursing your hair back to health. Try Elsta Mango Butter, Profective line, or Organic Root Stimulator products, all of whcih can be found at your local Walmart or pharmacy. If you have a little more money to spend you could either try the Ultra Black Hair, Cr猫me of Nature line or the Mane and Tail Deep Moisturizing line.

Decide how often you are going to shampoo and deep condition your hair. The once a month myth is sure to make your hair break off. You will want to shampoo and condition every 2 to 4 days, your hair will like that. If your hair is ok with that and you want to try every day, go ahead and see if that works for you. But 2 to 4 days is ideal. But you must listen to your hair!

Decide if you want to use "grease" in your hair. If it鈥檚 oily it could affect your skin and break you out, if it's heavy then your hair won鈥檛 hold whatever style you are planning on wearing because the oil is weighing your hair down. You could also use Virgin Olive Oil. This oil is a great product for your hair because it鈥檚 natural and doesn鈥檛 have all those sulfates, sodium鈥檚, and preservatives in them that some people鈥檚 hair can鈥檛 handle too well. It also gives your hair a nice shine with out it being too oily.

Moisturize your ends and keep them moisturized so they don鈥檛 split.

If you use heat on your hair, try and cut it down to once a week if you can and make sure you use a heat protectant on your hair before flat ironing or curling. Hold the barrel cover slightly open so the hair simply passes over the barrely without being tugged and pulled by the barrel cover when you use the curling iron. If you absoulutly must use oil when you use your curling iron, dab on a very, very, extremly tiny amount of Optimum Oil Therapy 3-in-1 Crem茅 and it won't leave your hair oily. A picture of this is also attached.

Make sure you tie your hair up before you go to bed with a Satin or Silk scarf. You can get them at Wal-Mart for cheap. You can also get a satin bonnet for when you have curls in your hair. Satin pillowcases are good for those nights when you just don鈥檛 feel like putting your hair up in a scarf. This prevents the hair from tearing and snagging and ultimately breaking off while you sleep. Also use jojoba, tea tree, olive, castor oil etc.

As for short Hair styles there are bobs, spiral curls with twists in the front, or possibly a weave that is cut short.

African american hair question?

We use relaxers not perms, there is a difference. This is what you can use BB mositurizer, S Curl, Carefree Gold, Surge 14, those are moisturizers and then oil your hair, with wildhairgrowth, jojoba, tea tree, olive, castor oil or anyother.

Avoid products lanolin, mineral, petroleum.

You can wear braids, bantu, two strands twists, coils or afo puffs. Embrace your natural and watch it grow if you take care of it.

After washing do all the treatment then do about 5 or 6 braids for that night and undo in the morning. No brushing and try not to comb your hair. Do deep conditioning with olive replenish pak or mayonnaise.

Your hair loves to be moist. I wash my hair sometimes 4 or 5 times a week.

African American Hair....How can I get perfect Micros?!?

Ok, I've gotten Micros 4 times in my life, and I only had it done perfectly once....all the other times I got it, they were braided to small, which made it seem like I was a lion, and that my head was big, and it was hard to put them into ponytails. Then I was gonna go with Singles, but I thought they were too big...so my question is...how can I get the perfect micros? What kinda hair is best? What are ya'll experiences with Micros?

African American Hair....How can I get perfect Micros?!?

It's really simple - Tell the person who is braiding your hair that you want a specific style and size braids. If you have a picture of the size you want, that helps also. I like micros, but they take just as long to put in as to take out.

African American Hair....How can I get perfect Micros?!?

iF YOU LIVE IN MONTGOMERY ALABAMA GO ON NARROWLANE ROAD IN THAT SHOPPING CENTER AND ITS A AFRICAN SHOP. aSK BENTU TO DO IT SHES GREAT.

African american hair ....HELP PLEASE?

how can i make my hair grow faster?

African american hair ....HELP PLEASE?

you can't speed up hair growth, growth rate is determined by your genetics. if you keep your hair healthy then it will grow to it's fullest potential...if no one in your family has long hair, you may just have short hair genetics. however, when your hair gets to shoulder length it is the toughest growth stage to get past because your hair is always brushing against things, it is best to do alot of protective styles during this stage, so as not to cause too much damage.

and no...trimming does not make your hair grow, it just stops your hair from breaking off as it grows so you can actually see the growth as it comes in

African american hair ....HELP PLEASE?

You grow about six inches of hair every year. The trick is keeping it long by keeping it super healthy and damage free.

Read this website and get the book:

http://www.ultrablackhair.com

Book is even cheaper on amazon.com

Good luck!

African american hair ....HELP PLEASE?

I'm not sure if it will help your hair type, but mane and tail shampoo and conditioner helps hair to grow. They use that on horses to help their mane grow. I also use it. Hope it helps.

African american hair ....HELP PLEASE?

Hair is protein, so eat more of that, and it might help your hair grow.

Don't smoke, load up on caffeine or fatty/sugary foods.

As much as possible, try to avoid heating your hair. I'm black, too, so I know how hard this can be. I wash my hair 3-4 times a week, but I only blow-dry once a week. Otherwise, I just let it air-dry, then I use a low setting on my flat iron.

Also, getting your ends trimmed every six weeks will help your hair grow, too.

AND, the infamous relaxers. I know it's expensive, but if you get relaxers, try to get it done at a salon. The store-bought ones are cheaper, but it's much easier to screw it up and overprocess the rest of your hair.

There's also something called HairTopia vitamins that are specifically made to help hair grow.

By messaging your scalp with Doo Gro or Dr. Miracles hair products.

Use the balls of your fingers and message the hair oil/hair creme/hair dressing. This will help the blood to circulate which stimulates the hair follicles which promotes hair growth.

Do this at least two times a week.

African American Hair Color Help?

I'm a black woman and would like to color my black hair a different color. I was thinking about dying it some type of deep red. I've tried all of the blond colors and I'm tried of them. Please help me with the right color and the right brand.

African American Hair Color Help?

Deep reds or copper tones really go well with black skin, especially if it's a lighter kind of black. If it's dark, however, dark browns or hinted deep reds would go nicely because you do not want to look fake.

Dark 'n Lovely has deep reds and so does Clariol Textures %26amp; Tones for African American Women.

Natural african american hair care, grow and prevent split ends and breakage?

when you wash your hair you should cornroll it whilev its wet and put a little gel in it then let air dry ........When it's finished it should be kinda crinculy and put a little water or sum thing on it to make a natural apperance it should last about a week and a half

Natural african american hair care, grow and prevent split ends and breakage?

Well healthier hair options would be to braid hair or even weave but make sure its done by a professional and not to tightly done. Also you could braid your hair at night take it out in the morning to have the curly look...

Twist braids- the two strand braid.....

To prevent breakage would be oil hair nightly

Moisturize daily

Conditon regualry

Drink water...

African American hair care question?

IS IT TRUE YOU SHOULD NOT RINSE YOUR HAIR WITH COLD WATER or ICE COLD WATER WHEN YOU GET A RELAXER?

African American hair care question?

yes it is true, cold water, closes the cuticle on the hair shaft, closing it up, and not allowing the relaxer to penetrate the hair.

Every time you wash your hair, at first, you'll notice the hair doesn't want to get saturated, it takes a while to get to the scalp and through the hair, that's because the cuticle is closed not allowing the hair to saturate. With warm/hot water it opens up.

You can use cold at the very end of your process, before styling, to close the cuticle, it creates more shine and softness.

African American hair care question?

no its not.

i have done it before. it wasnt fun but it didnt cause damage.

my stylist was working at a place wear they didnt pay the bill (ghetto huh?) so they turned off the hot water and i had to get it rinsed with ice cold water in winter. needless to say i got half off my relaxer lol :)

African American hair care question?

i read about black hair care all the time and actually its a lil better to use colder water really hott water damages the hair and can cause breakage..to learn more about black hair care u should pick a few hype hair magazines it has helped me alot ...

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

dont get me wrong, i like their hair. but how do u guys mantain it?

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

If you look at the cross section of hair for different races you'll notice a difference. These are more of a "guide" than a "rule," as there can be significant overlap between races.

African have a flat cross section, caucasians have an oval cross section, and asians have a circular cross section.

The difference in cross section, in addition to the level of scalp oil will dictate how easy the hair is to take care of.

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

it is better to get bald!!!

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

God made hair all different ways. That particular hair type doesn't have it's own oil like softer hair. There are many products to take care of that hair type. It's not only found on darker pigmented individuals either.

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

Our texture is way more course and usaully thick even if it is short. It all comes from our genetic lineage from way back when. The hot sun in Africa is sooo instense, that if we had delicate hair like other races, it wouldn't be able to withstand the heat and sun. That is why most Africans have little to no hair. Hispanics and Italians can also have hair like us, it just depends on their background. Did you know that on average 39% of the genetic makeup of Italians is African DNA? TRUE

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

It's not hard to take care of it's just we have different maintenance procedures. And not all African American hair is the same either, just like for other races, our hair type and texture can vary from person to person.

African american hair. how come its different and why so hard to take care of?

it's different b/c God wanted us to be special. how do we maintain it u ask? - we got skillz

Does shampoo for african american hair make cacasion hair grow faster.?

my friend's mom used to use shampoo for black womens hair on her hair and she said that it makes your hair grow realy fast. please im not rasist i just dont know how to put it any other way. and what does make your hair frow realy fast?

Does shampoo for african american hair make cacasion hair grow faster.?

Black hair is tigher and curlier than most ethnicities. Because of that tightnes sebum ( the stuff that makes your hair gressy after a few days, secreted by your sebaceous glands ) doesnt spread througout black hair.

Black hair care products are made to help add mositure to our thirsty hair. Since its more difficult to maintain our moisture balance its suggessted that we do not wash our hair everyday , maybe every three days or once a week.

If you are caucasian and your hair is constantly dry or brittle than black hair care products could work.. If you have oily greasy hair then you defenitely want to stay away from black hair care products...

Does shampoo for african american hair make cacasion hair grow faster.?

wow i have never heard that but now im interested!

Does shampoo for african american hair make cacasion hair grow faster.?

Ive read that fish oil makes your hair and nails grow fast.

You can get them in the vitamin section at the store.

Does shampoo for african american hair make cacasion hair grow faster.?

no. i know white women who have used hair products that are designed for African-American women and it changed the texture of the hair, made it kind of gross. I would not recommend using anything designed specifically for another race.

Does shampoo for african american hair make cacasion hair grow faster.?

There isn't a different so if you are black or kinda of american it should work fine.I am an Africian American so I use the preming creme dark and lovely so I use their shampoo and conitioner.hope this helps

White Girl using African American Hair Grease?

I have used B%26amp;B hair grease for years and I am a white girl, but my friend said that using black hair grease will make my hair not grow and that it will clog my hair follicles and cause a decrease in growth. I am currently growing my hair long and do not want that too happen....Does anyone really know?

White Girl using African American Hair Grease?

Um, a lot of black people(well the ones who are smart about hair) don't use that crap. It will clog your scalp pores which will result in delayed growth. DO NOT use the grease. ESPECIALLY if one of the first ingredients is "mineral oil" or "petrolatum"

White Girl using African American Hair Grease?

Your hair is fine.

White Girl using African American Hair Grease?

Don't worry about it! My mom is white (I'm mixed) and she has used African American hair products nothing happens as far as I have seen.

White Girl using African American Hair Grease?

I don't see why you need to use hair grease. However hair grease can clog pores if it has ingredients like petroleum in it. If you want to use a hair grease I would suggest natural hair products like 100%shea butter.

White Girl using African American Hair Grease?

OK., I am going to assume that you don't really think that your scalp is so different than a woman of color. Do you think that if it prevented growth in your hair that it somehow would not effect theirs? If the product had mineral oil in it I would say stop using it to you or anyone else using it but B%26amp;B hair grease does not have mineral oil in it therefore it should not be a problem. Your friend is probably assuming that it is a petroilioum product. Apparently she thinks that petroilium products only affect white people. Sorry to repeat myself but really it is a bit shocking that someone would even consider that.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

jus curious cuz im tryna grow my hair!

i wear it out sumtimesz

but mostly i have cornrows

so i was wondering if cornrows contribute yo my hair length =D

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

Cornrows is the best possible way to wear your hair to grow it out. Why? Black hair is extremely curly and the most delicate of all hair types. Natural oils are closest to the root. With curly hair the ends get dry and break without sufficient moisture. This is why black hair never appears to grow. When you cornrow your hair, you protect the ends. You need to shampoo and deep condition every two to four weeks with this style. Curly hair is distressed when shampooed too often. Use natural oils on it like shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, olive oil, etc. Your hair will grow very long!! I recommend that you change the style of the cornrows so as not to place too much stress on any one area of the scalp! Great lengths to you!

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

I think they do...they give your own hair a break...a break from curling irons and chemicals.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

i don't know, but try mane %26amp; tail shampoo and conditioner, it makes your hair really shiny and nice and helps it grow out faster..

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

I think it actually grows faster in cornrows.but i'm not completely positive.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

i don't have african american hair, but i would guess that cornrowing your hair would break it off and damage it. also just letting it grow without perming it straight would help it grow. it'd look like an afro for a while, though. keep lots of pink lotion in it and maybe wear a do rag or something. i know african american hair is SO hard to grow out. (got lots of friends)

good luck, these are just my opinions, don't really know for sure what would help.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

i think it grows faster with braids but if you let the braids be too tight, it could cause breakage. if you prefer to leave it down though, you should get regular trims, use a good conditioner, and make sure your hair creams are not petroleum-based. hope this helps.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

If you keep braiding your hair it will grow out faster. I used to wear a weave and under the weave I had my hair cornrowed and then the weave sown into the cornrows. My hair was so long after I took it out. The reason is some of the natural oil stays in the hair and it helps it grow. Keep the braiding up and you will have longer hair. Just make sure you are keeping your scalp greased. Hope that helps.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

cornrows but don't forget to get it trimmed. don't get it straightened or permed before you get it braided because that will break it!

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

I think it does. I have mine braided with a sew in. I'm hoping my hair will be longer and stronger when I take them out.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

yea it does I keep my hair in braids for bout a year and a half. When I took them down I had quite of length grown. I had them re-done every week or two weeks at the most and deep conditioned it with Hair Mayonaise by organic root stimulator for 45 min. under the dryer. I also sprayed my hair twice a day with leave in conditoner to keep it moisturized. But make sure the person who does it isnt pulling the hair from the front too tight it will only make you lose hair and in some cases you wont be able to grow it back because of traction alopecia.

Does African American Hair Grow Faster When Out Or In Braids???

it doesn't make your hair grow faster but it is a protective style so the hair doesn't break off as much and it gives it a break from all the heat and styling products we would other wise use to control our hair

An african-american hair question?

I have permed hair, and Im about to flat iron it, but the only problem is that I only have coconut oil and carrot oil, can I use this to flat iron and have lovely, silky, smooth hair when Im done? Can, someone give me any tips??

An african-american hair question?

i think you can use the carrot oil..i know you can't use the coconut oil..it says right on the bottle if you can use the stuff with heat..coconut oil is flammable so thats a big no

An african-american hair question?

yeah definatly dont use the coconut oil!!!! it will fry your hair.

African american hair help!!?

I have thick shoulder length hair that just will not stay curled unless i go to a salon. I know how the give it body but i want shine and curls without having to pay someone. any advice??

African american hair help!!?

Do you get your hair roller set, or do you get it marceled?

Marcel irons get MUCH hotter than most irons people use at home, so you need to get a high heat electric marcel iron from someplace like Sallys or a beauty supply store where you live. Make sure you have some kind of marcel wax or pressing oil (does the same thing - just protects the hair). After you've washed and dried your hair, lightly apply some wax or oil and curl your hair in whichever way. Use hairspray after.

If you roll your hair, make sure before you roll, that while your hair is wet, you use mousse (I have the best luck on clients when I use VolumeLock or V05 Whipped Mousse) throughout your hair. If you apply too much, your hair won't dry and it'll be sticky. Spray each section before you roll it with setting lotion, after you've rolled your hair spray on some oil sheen, then sit under the dryer until you're COMPLETELY dry, and give yourself another spray of oil sheen. Finish with hair spray.

That's how I roller set hair in the salon.

African american hair help!!?

Well, to give it body, shine, AND longer lasting curls, I use "Motions Wrapping Lotion". It comes in a clear bottle and it's not really lotion because it has a foam-like consistancy. You can find this product at your local grocery store and/or your local beauty supply store.

How to use it, is you apply it to your roots while your hair is wet (after it's been lightly towel dried), then you blow dry your hair and flat iron it. If you wrap your hair every night, then your hair will maintain body, and movement while keeping the curls!

African american hair help!!?

dont use a curling iron

African american hair help!!?

Use a foaming wrap lotion, Motions and Soft %26amp; Beautiful are the best. This gives hold without making hair hard. To add more shine to hair either use a oil sheen, I prefer a natural oil shiner or mink oil. You can also add few drops of oil to hand and distribute to hair while fingers styling, Kemi-Oyl is my favorite Oil to use on my hair.

African american hair help!!?

well, my friend has hair just like that, and what she does is just pull it back in a really tight, and small ppony tail, and then buys black ribbons, and covers up the real hair wit hthem, it looks pretty cool.

African american hair help!!?

after shampooing your hair and conditioning it really well, set your hair on the roller with some foaming lotion.once your hair is completely dry remove rollers and use some hot six oil, botanical oil or the oil of your choice.use enough to suit you.after you have applied the oil,go back under the dryer for at least 5minutes.i do this all the time.i like hot six oil and you can get that from most beauty stores for a reasonable price.i have used botanical oil made by aloxxi but that stuff is expensive and i found that hot six oil does a great job.

African American hair to stay healty?

I had to cut my hair really short(a little above the ear) over the summer because it was damaged and it has been growing its about almost to my shoulder. How can I prevent it from breaking again and keep it healthy

African American hair to stay healty?

keeping your hair clean and conditioned is the key to a healthy head of hair. also you should care for it when it is wet carefully so as not to break it in that weaken state.

not to much heat, and hold off on the chemical treatments. although people think that braids are good for growing it depends on the hair, braids if too tight can cause more damage that good. and ponytails that are too tight or made with rubber bands cut and break the hair.

keep it clean, invest in a silk pillowcase and a hair cap( i cant sleep in that cap so i got the pillow case) good luck.

African American hair to stay healty?

Just do not put any more chemicals in it, do not iron your hair too often, put oil in it, and only comb it when it is wet with a leave-in condition so that the hair follicle won't break. Good luck.

African American hair to stay healty?

Im 1/2 african american and what I do to keep it healthy is I dont wash it every day because it dries the hair out so I do it every other day. also dont straighten or curl your hair to often because it causes it to damage

African American hair to stay healty?

Wash and condition your hair once a week with Pantene Pro V for women of color. It works really well. Also get your split ends cut often I usually get mind cut every 4-6 weeks or whenever I get a relaxer. A relaxer shouldn't damage your hair if done correctly but do limit the heat. Sitting under the salon like hair dryers are better for your hair. Moisture is the key for African American hair so grease your scalp (not your hair) after every wash.

African American hair to stay healty?

The biggest thing I see when peoples hair break is not keeping ends clipped. Kep your ends clipped, and if you use gel, use it sparingly. Try not to use it at all if possible. If you must They have some vitamin c or e gel tablets or oil that you can add to your gel. It will be less harsh and drying out or your hair.

Some good products are Olive oil shampoo, conditioner, and perm. Try it once and you will never go back. I have been using it for over a year and it makes a big difference in my hair. it is not as harsh as the other perms are. It costs a lil more but it lasts longer also.

Also try to stay away from grease and stick to thinner oils, like extra virgin olive oil, b%26amp; b castor oil, or biosilk.. Those products work wanders.

If you can try to use the same product line of products, and don't put too many differnt things into your hair. Keep it as natural as possible. And wash it as much as your hair will permit without drying out.

Also a lot of people experience their hair drying out when they waash it everyday because they use the wrong shampoo. Shampoo can be very hard on your hair. Even cosmetologists will tell you that washing your hair often may break it. I and mixed and I wash my hair everyday with oilve oil shapoo and conditioner. Now, if I use other shampoos my hair will dry, but I have found that olive oil shapoo moisturizes your hair while cleaning it. And make sure to condition your hair whenever you wash it. When you use that olive oil conditioner, you will see what I amm talking about. Try it for 2-3 days. That is the olive oil shampoo and conditioner. You will see for yourself what I am talking about. i wish I could post a picture of my hair. it is full of body, is not weighed down or anything. I've been doing my own hair since I was younger. I won't even let an ehtnic person do my hair anymore because thay use gel most of the time which is bad for your hair. If you have anymore questions, email. I hope I covered everything.

Also, let your hair air dry as much as possible. Don't use heat as much as possible. And wrap your hair, and wrap it up at night. Even if it is short.

African American hair to stay healty?

keeping ur ends trimmed and trying to stay away from curling irob because they can damage ur hair. also keeping ur hair well conditioned and oiled.

Natural african american hair?

I really am thinking of stopping relaxing my hair. Who thinks I should do it? I have seen pictures on nappturality.com and the women have such pretty curly/kinky/nappy hair-- i LOVE it

Natural african american hair?

it takes--alot of paitence

if you dont have it then nappy isnt for you. you permed your hair for a reason and you know [and i know] what happens when you go too long without a touchup. [did it one summer...tried to go natural and i gave up] but if you really want to go for it.

Natural african american hair?

Go for it! Most Black women don't have napptural hair because they know so little about it! We are the only group of women who don't wear their natural texture! It's the best thing I've ever done for my hair. No more scabs and burns on my scalp. Nappturality.com is a great resource. Report It

Natural african american hair?

you know, I think there is nothing wrong with that. Relaxing really damages your hair. A lot of older African American have to wear wigs before they are really "old" because most of their hair has fallen out from years...decades of relaxing. Or younger women I have even seen with severe thinning at the edges of their hairline.

If you wanna go natural honey, more power to you.

Natural african american hair?

There was this chick at the University of Florida when I was there and she had a huge Afro and she wore this shirt all the time that said, "AFRO-DITE."

Awesome.

My hair won't do it, but I think 'fros are cool.

Check the book Curly Girl, by Lorraine Massey (I think that's who wrote it)--it has great tips for dealing with all kinds of curls. Wavy, kinky, curly, frizzy...every type. It's a great book.

Natural african american hair?

I think you should look into it further, because my aunt thought the same thing........I'm just suggesting that you find out about the price, maintenance, etc. Good luck though!

Natural african american hair?

Hmmmm...I just checked out the site and it sounds cool!

My friend has done the "twisting" to her hair and it looks cool and she says it is easy to maintain. I think that's the problem with us is that we want something that's easy to maintain. Right now, I have braids because relaxing my hair was becoming too cumbersome. The braids are much easier to deal with and saves me time getting ready in the morning - no rollers to deal with.

I think you should go for it!

Natural african american hair?

Mmm...I would look into that more. Going "natural" takes a whole heck of a lot more patience and time then just relaxing it. Why do you not want to relax it anymore? Is it because you yourself want to go natural, or because others want you to? Perhaps you should think about the reason you want to, and if you still do....then more power to ya!

Natural african american hair?

Yeah!! good for you! i'm currently in the starting phase of growing out my relaxer and going natural, believe me its for the best! i actually grew my hair out and cut off all my perm last year, but my naturl hair was so dry i got a relaxer put back in and got it cut. what a huge mistake!! my hair broke off all on my left side from the chemicals. i'm starting over cuz i realized i never had so much hair as when i was growing it natural. just make sure you keep it conditioned!! go to roshini.net, pebbles page, and motown girl for more ideas. good luck!

Natural african american hair?

I think you should, but to start off you might want to go to a hair salon, but I don't think it's a bad idea.

Natural african american hair?

You should definitely stop relaxing your hair. Straightenning should be a style option, if it's done at all, not something that you feel that you have to do so badly that you're willing to hurt yourself to do it.

Just be aware that you will lose some hair when you go natty. Relaxed hair is weaker, and will eventually shed. So you might want to cut that part off once you have enough new growth, or keep your hair in braids through the transition.

If after you have enough natural hair, you want to wear a straight style temporarily, there are always comb blowdryers, curling irons, and flat irons. Just be careful not to damage your hair. You're going to still have the African fullness to your hair, and that is a beautiful thing. Lots of folks do blow-outs (using a comb blowdryer) for manageability without the flat look and so much damage.

Join a community like nappturality.com or others, and tell people about your journey. Read about others' too. This will help with the moral support. :-)

Natural african american hair?

Well I have been "natural" for 2 years now and I LOVE IT!!! It takes awhile getting used to. I mean it may seem easier getting perms but it really isn't. You have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to keep it looking alright, in the summer all you do is sweat your perms out so you have to get more touch-ups, or 4 days after you get it done you can't tell what your style is supposed to be. I keep braids, but sometimes I get my hair pressed when I wonna feel it. you know what I mean. It is sooo much easier to maintain, and perms are so bad for your hair my hair has gotten real thick and it grows better since I stopped the chemicals. But you have to be careful with braids, too much tension and pulling on your edges can cause major damage so I get twisties in between braids or just for something different. You can do SO MUCH more with natural hair, but I do miss my fresh iron outs...sometimes!

Natural african american hair?

I recently did the big chop 2 months ago and am sporting a short natural. You should really think about why you want to do it and more importantly you shouldn't ask others if you should do it. Do it for you but realize it's not an easy thing to get used to. In the midst of this I found my "true" beauty. Do it for you and know why you want to do it. Peace and BLessings

Natural african american hair?

To be completely honest with you I think you should! It's funny because I was just thinking about this exact question just last weekend! I went to school, looked at the girls who had that long beautiful and healthy hair and realized that none of them get perms! Of course this came as a surprise but when I thought about it, everything fell into place. Just think, most of us get perms every 4-6 weeks, which is filled with chemicals. As time progress don't you think that our hair will become more weak? I was looking back on my kindergarten pictures and saw how long my hair was and noticed that the reason it was that long was because I wasn't getting perms and damaging it on a daily basis with these new straitening devices! With all of this being said I came to a Unpredictable decision... I want to start growing my hair natural! And yes, that website was actually one of the first places I went. Although I am starting this, I am NOT going to cut all of my permed hair off, just because of emotional reasons, I'm just going to let it grow out. Since we're both doing this, I hope that we are both very much satisfied with our natural hair!

African-American Hair Braiding Styles?

Ok, this is for all of you hair experts that know how to do all types of braids. (I kind of need an answer A.S.A.P. so if you could it would be great!) I need to know another name for the style called "Lacing Braids." I don't know another name for this hairstyle, I only know how to describe it - which doesn't seem to help people understand me. If your not sure what that is, here's a link that shows pictures of it and how its done. I can't seem to find magazines that show pictures of this particular hairstyle and I can't print the pictures out from the website. If you can help thanks.

Help with my African American hair! I have tried everything!?

I wore weave (sewed, glued, braids) for about 2 years straight and I have been going to the salon for about 2 years straight and my hair is shorter and more damaged now than before I started going. I know my stylist is good because everyone else who goes to her hair grows but mine. I have used growth oils and the longest I went without heat on my hair was 2 weeks. But my hair is so damaged that I can't simply wrap it because it comes out looking bad! It's longer on one side than the other and thicker on one side than the other and it has no body, not even after I first get it done. I have recently started taking vitamins and I am hoping those work because I don't know what else to do. I used to have long, thick hair up until about 7 years ago, then it just went downhill! Any suggestions on what to do besides going natural? I am considering getting micro braids because I will not be able to go to the salon. I hear they help with hair growth.

Help with my African American hair! I have tried everything!?

Well, all that braiding and messing with, and drier heat on the hair is definitely going to take a toll eventually. I'd suggest that you decide to just quit all that stuff, and give your poor ole "murdered" hairs a chance to get resurrected LOL. This happened a long time ago, but to this day I remember walking into the post office to get some stamps, and right in front of me in the line was a black woman who looked just fabulous. She not only had the most beautiful facial features, but she had her very african hair cropped close to her head, like a man's only beautifully shaped around her head. And it showed off a beautifully shaped head too. I couldn't keep my eyes off her, and almost was going to tap her on the shoulder and tell her how much I admired her "do" I kinda thought twice about it, and then it was her turn, and before I could make up my mind she was headed out the door. She gave me a very nice smile when she turned around and walked past me. I am thinking that while you are giving your own mangled hair a chance to recover, you might consider the cropped look. Also, you are absolutely right that what you put IN your body has a lot to do with the health of ALL your body parts, including skin, nails and hair. Eat healthy and take a multivitamin every day. You can also get supplements that specifically target hair. Just don't keep doing all that braided stuff. I mean it can look very nice, but it's gonna kill your hair eventually. And by the way, there is not one shred of evidence I ever heard of that there is anything that accellerates the growth of things like hair and nails. They are programmed to g row a certain amount maximum, and that's it. The best way you can maximise hair length is to get your whole system in A class health from the Inside, so that the hair does not become brittle and break at the ends

Help with my African American hair! I have tried everything!?

Get the micro mini's. That way your hair can grow in the braids.

Your hair got damaged because your not suppost to keep glue and weave in for 2 years straight. That will make you have the problems that you are having now. Let me know how the vitamins go because i was thinking about trying them too.

Help with my African American hair! I have tried everything!?

well you could try the Ionic straiting it works wonders. I'm black I know what you are going through. there are 2 problems with this though. it's really expensive and it takes forever ,but it is so worth it and if you can find a place that does it I completely suggest it.

Help with my African American hair! I have tried everything!?

I wouldn't suggest you get micros, depending on who does it, they can pull your hair resulting in more hair loss. I would suggest you get a haircut to start over, and stick with those vitamins, good luck.

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

i would like some serious advise about my hair, everytime i comb or brush my hair it comes out really bad can someone help me with this huge problem i have i want my hair to start to grow back but i just wont stop coming out help me please!!

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

Ironically I recently had this problem a few months ago, because I was not taking care of my hair (I am black and mexican, but I have straight up black hair). I had a lot of breakage in the middle of my head and kept it in a ponytail for 3 months until I had enough of the ponytail. I went to the shop, got my hair cut really short (the shortest ever in my life because my hair was so DAMAGED and UNHEALTHY). It is important that African-American (AA) hair be washed at least once a week (unless you sweat or around a lot of dust then wash it more often). Here is what I do that works for me and I do my sister's hair every Saturday and she is not mixed like me and has AA hair.Affordable but good shampoo and conditioner that has works is Pantene for colored women and leave the conditioner in for about 5 minutes (or try Aveda Brilliant Shampoo and Conditioner). You also need a good leave in conditioner and I use Aveda Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment. This product is to be used once a week. Next, I protect my hair before applying heat in it. Therefore, I apply a dime sized amount of CHI silk infusion (non-greasy and won't weight your hair down) and blow dry my hair straight. Next, I apply another dime size amount of silk infusion in my entire hair before using the CHI flat iron. (if you straighten it, try CHI flat iron and it leaves your hair with a silky salon look- don't get a cheap flat iron- the difference is dramatic to your hair and ceramic is less damaging). If you use a relaxer, I would lay off of it for a few months until you get your hair back healthy (I have been using Optimum Relaxer and it is really gentle). The CHI flat iron will do wonders for your hair (try E-bay or if you buy it in a store it comes with a one year warrenty) without buring it. I then section my hair and grab very small strands and spray each section before applying the CHI flat iron with both Motions heat protecting spray (or try Aveda Brilliant Damage Control) and Isoplus oil sheen (just a little). Next, I straighten it and when I use the CHI I kind of turn it like a curling iron for that pretty flip/curl in my hair. It comes out really pretty and silky and most importantly, healthy cause I am protecting my hair BEFORE applying heat- ESPECIALLY since I have a relaxer.

Also, grease your scalp to keep it healthy. The brand Optimum grease comes in a small pink jar and is light (or try Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade and Aveda Brilliant Spray on Shine). Remember, lay off any relaxer for now so your hair can become healthy again unless you plan on going to a shop every week. Otherwise, the CHI flat iron if your hair is long enough is good for now. My hair has been so much healthier the past two months and a half than it has been for those previous three months. Say no to permanet dye. Stick with the wash out. It won't damage your hair. Hope this helps. Please get your ends trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks and wrap your hair up EVERY night. Try to apply heat to your hair no more than once or twice a week. If you have to use a curling iron PLEASE spray with the heat protector (Motions or Aveda Brilliant Damage Control). It is the heat that will jack up your hair. I do my hair at home because I enjoy it (besides saving money). Unfortunately, you do have to spend some money on AA hair to get it back healthy if it is really damaged. I know I had to. Good luck!

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

Aveda Damage Remedy system. Its a shampoo, conditioner, and intensive treament. This is aveda's most expesive line. but believe me ts worth it.

This stuff works.

aveda products are atual, they have no waxes or harsh chemicals and leave your hair with a beautiful bounce. I have used it myslef an it really does leave your hair thicker with life.

I work at aveda and i'm educated about the products.

Try it out and be sure not to mix aveda product with any other ones.

Good luck!!!

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

i had this prob too. most likely it's too dry. avoid straightening irons and blow dryers, they dry out hair horribly. put some hir pomade /grease/ oil whaterver in your hair and wrap it before you go to bed every night. use a moisturizing and anti- breakage conditioner and don't wash your hair too often because that dries it out. try once or twice a week. brush hair starting at the bottom, then move up. also don't over brush har or rip out knts

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

How do you Comb wire/your hair?

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

time to cut it off and start over, white people do it too

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

Wash out conditioners are fine BUT you need a good LEAVE-IN conditioner. Especially when it comes to african-american hair. You want to have consistant maintaince of it. I highly recommend PANTENE pro-v restoratives Strengthening Spray. You can buy it at Walmart, Kmart or any drugstore. Use it after you wash and condition as your last step. You can also use it daily. Honestly the results are immediate. It's from the breakage defense line. Try it and let us know how it worked for you.

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

If you don't get your hair trimmed every 6 weeks then you need to to do so. You also need to put a deep conditioner in your hair every week for about 15-20 minutes. Put a plastic cap over your head and sit up under the hair dryer. The heat will help the conditioner in your hair. When it's time to rinse your hair rinse with almost cold water. This cold water will lock the conditioner into the pores in your head. You should also try to do a hot oil treatment in your hair once a week also. You can get these from the store and use while your in the shower if you want to. VO5 hot oil treatment works for African American hair too. You also need to make sure your hair is not dry in the scalp either. Dry hair can cause break off as well so make sure you use a good everyday moisturizer. By the way I'm a black female too.

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

Use a wide toothed comb to comb your hair - not a brush.

Try not to use hair straighteners or irons on your hair. Keep the ends trimmed and use a really good conditioner.

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

silly child, stop straightening it! but its normal to lose a wad of hair every time u brush it.

Straightning Natural African-American Hair?

Can Spritz make my natural ethnic hair stay straight after I've curled it. I have kinky hair, but would like to put my hair in curls sometimes, but do not know what products will make my hair not revert to being kinky after I straighten it and hot curl it. Thanks Millions.

Straightning Natural African-American Hair?

I agree with Dee.

I wear my hair natural as well and instead of resorting to chemical straightening I use a pressing comb.

Pretty much whever you buy a comb, there is usually seting lotions and straightening products that you can use to straighten the hair as much as you can. I was able to find a thermal straightening cream that you can apply to your hair (after wash, shampoo, and drying) before flat ironing it or pressing it with a comb. I think the company's name is You Straight. There is also Straight Sexy straightening gel.

Good Luck!

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

I had a few questions about it....

1: Should I use a kit or get it professionally done?

2: What should I do to keep it nice and smooth after and before the job.

3: How can I get it to be nice and soft without grease and stuff.

4: If I get it professionally done will it look like this:

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii236... [just the hair not other stuff]

5: If I use a kit, what brand and stuff?

Also, whatever you know about straightening black people hair :D

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

Sometimes if I need to do a quick touch up I will use an at home kit. For the kit though I have my mom do it because I'm afraid I'm going to screw my hair up and I'm 21. Usually though I go to a hair stylist and she does the perm for me. If this is your first time getting one get it professionally done. If you do it at home for the first time you may risk burning your scalp and having your hair fall out if you don't follow the instructions exactly. This is serious business.

When you get it done make sure to keep it moisturized (I'm married to my S-Curl moisturizer which you can get at Sally Beauty Supply or Walmart) and you need to wrap it up at night with a silk scarf. Cotton scarfs and bandanas are not good because the cotton is a rough fabric that will suck up the moisture in your hair and cause breakage. I would recommend the Keracare line but it's a bit pricey. I also like Nexxus (also pricey), Garnier Fructis, Suave and VO5. Also when you wash you hair after getting it relaxed you need to straighten it if you want it to be super straight.

If you want more info on black hair care go here and read the threads in the different sections: http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

that's a weave in the beyonce pic

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

Just use a relaxer.

Something like African Pride.

Or Dark and lovely.

After that, just keep it greased.

And if you want that beyonce look,

Just flat iron it.

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

If you've never permed your hair, I would suggest going to a professional first to get an idea of what is going on. Second, ask questions about the process while he or she is doing it. If it starts to burn, let them know immediately!!

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

Dont straiten ur hair not only does it show (in my opinion) little pride in ur Blackness, but perming and permanant straiteneing causes the hair line to recede to a point where u have an ugly and bald bid forhead. It also causes your hair roots to die and thats why they are straitened. Can u imagine the chemacals used to make that kind' o stuff. Its COMPLETELY unhealthy

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

your hair is not going to look like Beyonces weave, it;s going to be flat and lifeless if you relax and don't take care of it properly.

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

my suggestion for you is to get it professionally done..if something goes wrong with u doing it at home you will still have to see a professional so why mess up your hair when u dont have too..

As far as keeping it smooth once the hair has been relaxed, you need to get a satin or rayon material type scarf to keep your hair wrapped in at nite when you sleep becasue if u dont your hair will become dry and brittle...

The products i would recommend for u would be the Keracare line..the y have essential oil, oil sheen, wrap lotion etc..everything to make the hair smooth and pretty.

You will also need a good flat iron to keep the hair smooth on a weekly basis..I recommend a Chi iron or a weechi..

please dont use a kit because it is bottom shelf ingredients and over a period of time your hair will not be healthy..

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

It's a good idea to go to a professional your first time because you don't know how much product will be needed for your hair or how long it will take you if you do it yourself. It's much easier to straighten hair permanently after it's already straight. Doing it yourself for the first time may result in you leaving the product on too long on some sections of your hair or running out of perm. Don't wash or wet your hair several days before the perm. Avoid scratching your scalp, combing and brushing at least 24 hours before. Perms work in about 25 minutes and if your scalp is vulnerable, it will burn and likely cause you to demand it be rinsed out before time is up. You'll waste your money and time because it's not a good idea to re-perm the hair before 6 weeks is up, even if you didn't leave it on for the full processing time. "New growth" is the part of your hair by the scalp that has grown since your perm. You've seen when unnatural blondes have brown hair at the scalp- that's new growth. You can get a kit which is usually less than $7 to use on the new hair. I would suggest you read the instructions several times before starting. Get a mirror AND a hand mirror so you can look at yourself from different angles. Keep a clock handy so you don't over process which will result in damage, fuzziness and breakage. Part your hair in to fourths and hold each section with something that's easy to remove and apply. Understand that the time begins the moment the perm touches your hair. If you start at the front, the back won't get as much time before you'll need to rinse, so think about how you're going to do it. Perming with bare fingers is the easiest for me, but the product turns your fingernails an ugly yellow. If the gloves provided in the kit make you feel sloppy, get some dish gloves that fit your hands better. Absolutely use the Vaseline provided in the kit to protect your ears and forehead. Part each section several times and apply the product to the new growth starting at the scalp and smoothing toward the rest of the hair. Try to avoid overlapping as much as possible. It happens, of course. Use the back of the comb to occasionally smooth the hair being permed. It will scrape the product off, just reapply it. You have to work efficiently to give all of your hair a fair chance to process in the time allotted. When it's time to wash, I suggest you rinse first, smoothing your hair the way you permed it. Your hair is vulnerable at this time and you shouldn't vigorously wash it. Rinsing it will help remove some of the extra product so you can better use that little bottle of neutralizing shampoo. Use it all if you have to. Wash your hair 8 times if you have to! Don't stop until you get the product out or it will continue processing your hair. African-Americans have different hair textures just like they have different skin colors. This is why you won't know what your hair will look like until you perm it. Some hair will still look very textured, some will look even smoother than the pic. If you don't want to use grease, try a texturizing lotion, pink oil moisturizer or the like. Put it on while the hair is still damp to hold in moisture. Use in between washings. Straight hair is dry because of the perm and the flat iron. When it's straight, it's suggested you wash it every 10 days unless you sweat a lot. It will actually look better when it's a bit dirty. The brand is entirely up to you, but I suggest you stay with a brand once you start. Perming is just the beginning. It looks great if you use a flat iron to style and keep the hair smooth. Perming leaves the hair very weak so it's a good idea to give it a rest and leave conditioner in it sometimes or just braid it up with no product. Also, you should try to go longer than 6 weeks between perms- that's just the minimum amount of time. Oh, and you should perm your hair "downward" or in the basic shape you want your style to be. Good luck!

Permenatly straightening African American hair.?

First off that's a weave/wig so beyonce hair isn't that texture it's just like yours and mine.I suggest you get it professionally done but you must maintain it yourself afterwards to keep it healthy. Also wrapping with a silk scarf is a key essential in permed flat ironed hair so

Question about African American hair....?

I just came out of the shower from washing my hair and I'm feelin lazy... Is it ok to let my hair air dry? Lots of black girls say not to but why? Will my hair break? I'm half black half white, but trust me- I have some nappy hair! lol

Question about African American hair....?

No if you blow dry it all the time that will make your hair break and get all dried out, after you shampoo your hair you should deep condition it with a really good moisturizer and left it sit for about 10 to 15 Min's or more then rinse out with warm water, towel dry it grease your scalp comb and brush your hair out and put it up in a pony tail Brade it and let it dry for the night. Also if you wanna dry your hair go buy a sit under dryer at sally's they are cheap, they are like $40 it's way better then blow drying trust me, and you should also get a hott comb and straighting it out when your hair is dry or if you don't know how get some one to do it for you this will help you al ot . even try going to the salon ever 2 weeks they will take good care of your hair, I suggest you buy moisturizes at Sally's hair store. God bless. One more thing when you let the conditioner sit get a plastic cap and put it over your head and let it sit while you clean or cook or watch TV and then it will be time to rinse it out. their is this shampoo and conditioner called Silk Elements, or PANTENE Pro- V Relaxed%26amp; Natural for women of color, their is this deep conditioner that I use called"tea tree" you can buy any one you want but use this after you shampoo and condition your hair and then let it sit and rinse out good luck. P.S. you can find alll those products at Sally's and ask for black hair treatment.

Question about African American hair....?

It's always better to let your hair air dry. Putting heat on it can damage it so it is better to stay away from blow dryers and stuff. Heat can break you hair, air does nothing to it.

Question about African American hair....?

Well this is my perspective I have been letting my hair air dry for years and I have no problem with breakage or anything of that nature the only problem is is that if you wanted to style your hair it wont last very long I have worked in Cosmetology for 5 years and haven't quit had any problems with air drying if anything blow drying does cause over drying or some form of breakage as leaving it wet try to put some form of leave in conditioner that will benefit u more hope this helps

Question about African American hair....?

Moisture will cause African American hair to become "tighter" (kinkier).

Question about African American hair....?

Wash it, condition it, spray it with a kiddie detangler, and then let it air dry. You may even wanna add some hair gel to keep the puffiness down.

I agree, too much heat can ruin it.

Daily hair moisturizer for African American hair?

I recommend Fantasia's Tea Oil Moisturizer Hair Lotion. This lotion not only moisturize, it also restores health in the hair and very light so there is no worry for any build up or 'heaviness'. It also softens it, great use as a heat protectant if you frequently use a flat iron or any other heat appliances, strengthens the hair and smells VERY good!

For any kind of hair, even African American hair (I inherited that hair from my father, so I can tell you from experience) its hard to find a lotion that WON'T make your hair greasy.. but I started using Sunsilk Hydra TLC 24/7 creme. It tames flyaway hairs while restoring it and moisturizing it.

First African Americans are only suppose to wash their hair every 10-12 days because shampooing removes the natural oils from our hair.

Try either Doo Gro Lotion or Luster's pink Oil Moisturizing Lotion.

Try using a different type of shampoo maybe that can take away the frizzes, but if you think the shampoo is not the problem, then put mousse on it, it works great!!!!!!!!

Are you using a hair dryer or a blow dryer. There is a difference. If you can find a Sally's Beauty Salon, go there it is a place where you can purchase hair products. They have a big selection of hair products for different types of hair. Ask a clerk, they should be experienced enough to get you the products that you need. Good Luck!

For african american hair? My hair gets frizzy when i blow dry it?

Try letting your hair air dry. When I gave up the curling iron and hair dryer, my hair thrived. I recently started blowdrying and the frizz and split ends started up again. But if you must blowdry try using a serum on the ends as you dry.

For african american hair? My hair gets frizzy when i blow dry it?

If you are African American, you will be unable to blow dry your hair to make it straight. It will only make it poofy and more frizzy. I suggest that you towel-dry your hair instead, or use a difuser that is inserted on your blow dryer. Then, after your hair becomes completely dry, section your hair and take a flat iron (like these:http://www.folica.com/flat_irons.htm ) and flat iron your hair until it is straight.

Straightening African-American Hair?

I have very thick, coarse hair. I have a relaxer, but it doesn't get my hair as straight as I would like. Usually when I flat-iron my hair, it takes three hours to get it as straight as possible. Is there any kind of product that I can put on it prior to flat-ironing it to help it straighten faster? Preferably something non-greasy. I've used several different products, but nothing has worked.

Straightening African-American Hair?

while hair is still wet apply lotta body setting lotion blow dry then flat iron dry apply a light mist of olive oil , oil sheen be sure to wrap every night

Straightening African-American Hair?

hmm...well what works really well on me is the after party bed head. It is a creamy formula (non-greasy) and works awesome! I love it! :p

Also, you might want to try using HAI or CHI straighteners, im not sure if you have one of them already. lol Well, I hope I helped and good luck with the hair!!! :D byeee!

Straightening African-American Hair?

Using Pantene Pro- V products (shampoo, conditioner) and a wet hair- friendly straightener will do the trick! I hope I helped!

Straightening African-American Hair?

If you've tried a relaxer, and you still did'nt get the look you desired, then do not put in another relaxer for another 6-8 weeks. You may find relaxers on the market that are for "Coarse Hair",but they don't specify "Thick or Thin Coarse". It is best to go to a Hairdresser. Store bought relaxers for coarse hair must remain on the hair longer in order to work. Hair breakage may result,if left on too long. Go to a hairdresser in about 6-8 weeks, and they will strip the old relaxer with a special treatment, and reapply a new one.

(Good Luck)

Straightening African-American Hair?

U probably need to get a relaxer that is for your hair type. Check to see if your stylist is using a regular or super relaxer. Regular relaxers or for fine/thin hair easily processed hair and a super is for thick coarse hair like yours. If your hair is long 2 boxes of store brand relaxers are needed so that the chemical could take from root - tip. Also ask your stylist for a doobie wrap/ roller set that the easiest way for your hair to be its straightest. cost about $15 depending where u live and what salon u go 2.

As far as straighting products they will always b oil/ water based cause you hair needs moisture to stay health. If you constantly flat ironing with out product your hair is gonna b dry and ultimately damaged. Good luck Hope this helped.

Straightening African-American Hair?

You need a blow dryer and Redken serum No. 4 or Paul Mitchel super skinny. After your wash apply either serum to wet hair. You're now going to blow out your hair in sections using a boar's hair round brush. Piece by, piece. Then take a flat iron (yes a plug in one-and a good one, but you can go with hot tools if you must. STAY AWAY FROM OVENS). Press your hair piece by, piece. you'll love the reasults, and it's much better on your hair. No scorching and not a lot of products that are going to weight down your hair

Please dont say be happy with your hair or something else liek that you are not me and i am happy with my self. I just want to know.

Best products for African American hair?

Steps

2. Black hair can get very dry, so moisture is key when nursing your hair back to health. Try Elsta Mango Butter, Profective line, or Organic Root Stimulator products, all of which can be found at your local Walmart or pharmacy. If you have a little more money to spend you could either try the Ultra Black Hair, Cr猫me of Nature line, or the Mane and Tail Deep Moisturizing line.

3. If thats too much try once a week. But you must listen to your hair!

5. Moisturize your ends and be sure to keep them moisturized so they don鈥檛 split.

Tips

* Oil natural hair (not straightened, permed or relaxed) about once each day. Oil straightened hair no more than twice a week with an extremely tiny dab of the stuff only AFTER putting on a moisturizing leave in. This is called sealing. The oil seals in the moisture of the leave in and ensures that thehair stays healthy.

* Another really good shampoo and conditioner is Pantene relaxed and natural for women of color.

* Make sure you don't wear your hair in one style for a long time or everyday your hair will break off.

* It is best to get a relaxer every 8 weeks or longer, in order to prevent overprocessing and making sure that only the new hair is relaxed

* A good shampoo is John Paul Mitchell Super Skinny shampoo. It is kind of expensive but its worth it get the conditioner to go with it.

* To reduce tangles, try trimming your ends.

* Wear a satin bonnet or scarf to bed.

* Avoid rubber bands.

* Instead of using shampoo, try washing your hair as you usually would, but with conditioner only. Use cheap conditioners like Suave, White Rain and VO5. They all work well.

Warnings

* If your hair is relaxed, only relax your new growth and NEVER overlap the relaxer onto previously relaxed hair. To prevent overlapping the previously relaxed hair, which causes overprocessing and ultimately breakage, apply an essential oil, castor oil, extra virgin oil, or vaseline to protect the previously relaxed hair.

* A key factor in maintaining the length and overall health of your relaxed hair, reapply the relaxer only to the new growth( virgin hair that has never had chemicals applied to it). Most stylist will recommend a touch - up every 4-6 weeks; that is not always necessary some hair textures only need to have a touch -up every 3 months which is 12 weeks, and some can extend longer without any damage to the hair shaft. It is vital to do what is best for your hair texture and alawys make certain to never leave the relaxer on the hair too long; this will cause serious damage and possible hair loss. Follow the instructions on the relaxer hair care system if you are relaxing on your own. If you are going to a professional stylist make sure to vocalize when the relaxer is burning or if their is any discomfort at all to prevent hair loss.

Things You'll Need

* Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner

* Deep conditioner

* Protein treatments

* Essential oils like jojoba, coconut, castor oil, carrot, and olive oil

* Silk or satin sleep scarf

braids.. the best thing to do is to learn how to braid your own hair.. here is a tutorial on youtube I found that explains how to braid your own h air with synthtic hair:

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=QvqhnDCAtU...

The reason i suggest putting in individual braids is because when you're hair is braided its in a no contact state, which means no brushing, combing, straighten with heat at all which allows your hair to not break at the ends. Do this for about 1 year and you will see results..

Im doing that too.. there are other methods but the braids in my oppinion is the best method because it protects your hair
