African american hair???
...the hair shaft is the portion extending above the skin surface. The shaft is made up of three layers----the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla.
The cuticle is the protective scalelike cells that point away from the scalp towards the hair ends. It consists of seven or more overlapping layers. The cuticle protects the inner structure of the hair.
The cortex, middle or inner layer, gives hair its flexibility, elasticity, strength, resilience and color. This portion is where everything you put on your hair enters theough the cuticle----shampoos, condtioners, haircolor, chemicals and even water.
The medulla is the innermost layer. It may be absent in fine or very fine hair. Present in all wavy and curly hair; the tighter the curl, the stronger the medulla. The more medulla, the softer and the more porous the hair will be
Well-conditioned cuticle layer protects the cortex. When the cuticle so badly damaged the cortex is exposed. The hair becomes weak, lifeless and almost impossible to manage. If left this way too long, the hair will fall out. The better you take care of the cuticle the stronger the hair will be and the longer it will grow.
Porosity is the ability of all types of hair to absorb moisture. Hair porosity is affected by such factors as excessive exposure to sun and wind, use of harsh shampoos, tints and ligtheners, previous chemical applications and use of thermal thermal styling appliances. If hair is tinted, bleached, has been exposed to the sun or was overprocessed by chemical applications it will absorb liquids quickly and easily.
A moisturzing shampoo will correct dry, brittle, or frizzy hair. Shampoo and condition every 4 days. Use a protein conditioner. Always allow the conditioner to remain on under a plastic cap and under a warm dryer for 15mins. Rinse well. Apply oil to the damp hair so hair will not be too oily. Allow to sit for 5-10 mins. before styling.
Hot oil treatment is also an excellent way to give your hair much needed moisture. It can be done one a week.
Nexxus, Madina, Burt's Bees all make great products among others...shop around for products that you are comfortable with...

African american hair???
Use nexxus Therappe Shampoo and Humectress Conditioner, i swear by them. i don't really like products geared towards "Black Hair" because most people don't know what there doing, they think becuase our hair is kinky that we need more oil rather than Vitamins Etc. so stick with companies like Pantene Nexxus Paul Mitchell Etc
African american hair???
Use products specifically geared towards African American women. Our hair is naturally different from our white and Asian counterparts. You could damage your hair if you a product for women with thin, naturally straight hair, as opposed to a product for women with thick, natural curly, kinky, or nappy hair.
