African-American Hair Care Question???!! Relaxer/Perming?

I usually wear braids, but I relaxed my hair between braiding sessions (maybe a couple of days before I braided), so I have "virgin hair". This year I want to have straight hair, no longer in braids, obviously, and bought a flat iron (Conair Infiniti). It works fine...for two days. I was wondering if there is any solution to my desire for straight hair because obviously my hair cannot hold a straight hair from a flat iron (also, I'm very active as in running, so maybe that's the reason). Anyway, should I perm/relax my hair? What's the difference between perming and relaxing? How longs does it last? Thanks.

African-American Hair Care Question???!! Relaxer/Perming?

Well, since you're an active runner, maintaining your straight hair might be a bit of a challenge because you're going to be sweating a lot, which de-activates the perm and frizzes up your hair.

There's really no difference between perming and relaxing, and, when maintained correctly, they can last for around two months before you'll need a touch-up. If you decide to relax your hair, make sure you know that it's *permanent*, and that once you have those chemicals in your hair, the texture won't be the same (especially if you continue to perm your hair).

Honestly, since you're a runner, I think you should keep you hair the way it is, and if you want to straighten your hair, ask at a salon if they can press it for you. You hair ends up silky straight, and there's no commitment because they don't use chemicals! :)

I think relaxers make your hair straight, and perms make your hair curly. Or it could be the other way around.

Your hair is so much healthier without any type of chemical on it, so I think you should just stick with flat ironing it. You dont always have to wear it down if you straighten it, there are many other hairstyles too. :]

it's the same thing. they usually last for about 2 months depending on your hair type and how you hairs takes it.

In the African-American world, they are the same thing. Too others, a perm makes your hair curly. So if you want straight hair, i suggest you find a good hairdresser, who has been working on african-american hair for awhile. She/he will decide what strength chemical you need (mild, regular or super). They will also give you a good deep conditioning and trim your ends. Probably will run you about $100 the first time depending on where you live and you can find out how much a touch-up will cost every 6-8 weeks.

Use African Pride perm/ relaxer depending on your hair type I would use regular if you relax your hair use a conditionar and let it sit for about 20 mins. Than rinse that out allow your hair to air dry then part your hair starting from the bottom back of your hair use the African Pride hair grease just a little then press your hair out with your flat iron. Then as soon as your done with the one part of your hair straighten it roll it up with a sponge roller then when you are done it will be nice and have body to it. For keeping it straight I am a dancer and sweat my hair out a lot before you go to bed at night EVERY night brush your hair and roll it up into about six sections so you will only need six rollers(depending on how thick or thin your hair is) wear a cap at night then wake up the next morning and brush it you should be fine. Do not use the flat iron everyday it will break your hair off use it only once a week try to only use it if you NEED to-- also if you oil your scalp every other night it will keep your hair straight.

If you have any other questions you can e-mail me and I can e-mail some great products and some good flat irons. Hope this Helps :) O there is really no huge difference between perm and relaxer.

African-American Hair Care Question???!! Relaxer/Perming?

I am a cosmetologist, so let me see if I can straighten this out for you. The difference between a perm and a relaxer is that a perm does create curl, while relaxers are used to reduce the curl in your hair. If you want your hair staight most of the time it would probably be a good investment to have your hair relaxed, which last several months. There are a few drawbacks though, as there are with most things we all do with our hair. Having your hair permanently relaxed does do damage.

The reason your hair doesn't hold after using a flat iron can be a number of reasons, a large one could be that the flat iron is not hot enough. Beauty supply stores have great ceramic irons that work very well, though some cost a pretty penny.

A great thing for you to do would be to go into a salon (preferably the one you would have it relaxed at) and ask them which would be better for your hair. If your hair is damaged now because of excessive ironing it may not be a wise choice to have it relaxed. The stylist would be able to help you in that area, and judge whether your hairs end results would be better. Hope that helped.

African-American Hair Care Question???!! Relaxer/Perming?

relaxers and perms for Blacks r pretty much the same- they help straighten our hair. but if i were u i would stick wit bein natural and keep flat ironing. chemicals can damage the hair and wearin it natural amd keepin up wit trims can help it to grow. when u run of course the sweat is gonna make ur hair nappy. i flat iron my hair maybe once or twice every two weeks when its not braided and i acheive that by makin sure i wrap my hair n a scarf at night or whenever im n tha house. try it. too much heat from the flat irons can cause damage as well.
