I've had my hair in braids all my life. Now at sixteen, I have decided to take my hair out of braids and wear it "natural" (i.e. Flat-ironed) I have a few questions for my fellow African-Americans who are experienced:
1. How do I maintain my hair in it's flat-ironed state?
2. If I sweat (because I plan to run daily) will it ruin it?
3. How do I style it?
Thanks a lot. I know it's all of questions to be asked.

Hi,
To wear your hair natural means to wear it without using chemicals or heat to alter the texture. So technically, you would not be wearing your hair natural.
1.I would not suggest using grease or any type or product that contains mineral oil or petroleum in it because they are very harmful to your hair. They do nothing but sit on top of your hair. Plus they can clog your pores and cause outbreaks. Which is why you see a lot of African American women with acne on their forehead and temples. I suggest something light. Try natural products. www.oyinhandmade.com makes really great stuff. Wrapping your hair and night and covering it with a satin scarf would be best. This will help it to stay smooth and help the flat iron look stay longer. Avoid over heating your hair to lessen the damage by heat. Use a good shampoo and conditioner formulated for treating hair that gets a lot of heat. And please, remember this if nothing else. There is no difference between "white" hair products and "black" hair products. This is a marketing scheme. The only difference is the commercials. Pantene Pro V Relaxed and Natural line is crap. Stick with regular Pantene Pro V.
2. Yes, sweating will cause your edges to revert back to their natural state.
3. Try to avoid using as much heat as possible. Since you intend to flat iron, do so as less as possible. Style it however you like. Up, down, curly, or just bumped...you'll look great :)
If you decide you would like to go 100% natural, check out this wonderful site. It was put together by an African American woman looking for information on styling natural hair. It is a beautiful site and the women on there are very informative and friendly. There are also style tips, hair how to's, recipes for natural products, and wonderful pictures of people's hair to help you get ideas.

Well I'm not african american but I know how to care for your hair and my hair.
Once you sweat or if it's humid outside, your natural hair will come back (curly) at the roots and the flat ironed hair will be frizzy. Any kind of dampness or water will ruin the straight hair.
Style it any way you want!! Go pick up a hair style magazine from WalMart...Black Hairstyle and Hairstyles magazines are great...really there aren't a LOT of differences in styling black and white hair, other than natural hair holds styles better and there are more styles to choose from.
You may really do best to go to a salon or talk to some friends who wear their hair down or naturally about the best way to care for it...the weather where you live has a little bit to do with how you will care for it. Wash it once a week or so (whenever it starts getting dirty), try to avoid blow drying if possible, when you flat iron or curl it ALWAYS use pressing oil or a thermal protection spray or you'll fry your hair. Make sure to always get your trims about every 2 months.

1. wear a silk scarf at night when you're sleeping.
2. The hair close to your scalp will get a little "tight".
3. Using the flat iron, flip the ends under or up. I would go for under...like a pageboy.
4. for your first time I would let a professional do it, then get suggestions from them.

First thing, flat ironing with ravage your hair. Too much heat. if you want it straight and sleek, wrap set it at nights. Put it up in a ponytail when you go to jog.
As far as style goes, just play with it, try out different stuff at home in your mirror or buy Sophisticate's Black Hair magazine, its only $5.00.
