Dead african american hair?
Trust me dear, your hair can't "die". That just means your hair is dry. That's what happened to me before. But I think its because all the blow drying and hair straightening. One thing to do is treat them. I recommend cholesterol hot oil treatment. They do wonders. And get trims monthly so your ends could be in their best shape! =]

that means split ends in need of a trim.

Dear gentle reader,
First and foremost, all hair is already dead matter!!!
At issue here is what caused your hair to be "Damaged" in the first place. You should stop trying to make your hair straight! Look to the word in your question.... "African"
You are not genetically predisposed nor intended to have straight or otherwise chemically treated hair.
Embrace your Natural nappyness and save your hair and your Black pride in the Process (No pun intended).....

All of your hair is dead. You may have split ends. Cutting split ends off will help make your hair look nicer, but it won't grow any faster. What happens is the longer you let split ends stay on your hair, they will begin to split higher and higher, so cutting them off would just get rid of them before they damaged your hair anymore and of course, healthy hair grows. So you should definitely get your ends cut and keep hair clean and moisturized. Hope this helps.

Your hair isn't dead. You have split ends. Go to a salon and get the ends trimmed. You have to keep your hair oiled...black hair produces little to no oil. Caucasian hair gets oily on its own because their scalp produces oil. We have to put oil into our hair. If you want to grow your hair out, google "crown and glory method". It is a pretty good website. Condition your hair every time you shampoo, and try not to shampoo more than once or twice a week. Also, google "grow black hair long" or "growing out black hair". You can get a lot of good ideas from people who have done it. It definitely is possible to grow your hair long. Don't give up. But you may have to give up the curling iron/flat iron for a while. But it can be done.
